The system is installed in the home’s ductwork, usually, with a separate bit of duct extending outside the home. As air flows into this duct from outside, it passes through a heat exchanger. At the same time, stale air from inside the home is flowing outside through the same system. The two airflows pass by each other, equalizing each other’s temperature. This means that by the time the fresh air from outside enters your home, it will be roughly the same temperature as the air already inside. This is how the system adds fresh air without ruining climate control.
